Natura 2000

Natura 2000 is the network of interconnected European protected areas, consisting of Fauna-Flora-Habitat areas (FFH areas, under Directive 92/43/EEC of the Council of 21 May 1992 on the conservation of natural habitats and of wild fauna and flora) and Bird Protection Areas (SPA, under Directive 79/409/EEC of the Council of 2 April 1979 on the conservation of wild birds). It aims to protect characteristic, special, rare, and endangered habitats, animal, and plant species across Europe. The member states of the European Union have a responsibility to preserve characteristic natural landscapes and biodiversity.
